Recurrent vaginal infections after sexual intercourse
What happens to the vaginal flora?
Sperm is alkaline (pH level greater than 7) and causes a temporary shift in the pH level of the vagina. Normally, the natural vaginal defence system corrects this shift. In women who are susceptible to recurrent vaginal infections, this correction may not work quickly enough, which can lead to a reappearance of the bacterial vaginal infection, particularly after intercourse. The acidification of the vagina with lactic acid quickly counterbalances / buffers the alkalinity of the sperm and supports the existing vaginal flora.
What is the goal?
To support the vaginal flora.
